Workers at California Medical Marijuana Company Join Teamsters

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept 03, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Teamsters Vote Overwhelmingly to Ratify Strong New Contract

Workers at a California medical marijuana company have voted overwhelmingly to ratify their first-ever contract. The 38 workers are now represented by Teamsters Local 70. Medical marijuana is legal in California.

The workers are employed by Marjyn Investments LLC in Oakland, a management company retained by multiple lawful cooperatives organized under California laws for the purpose of providing patient access to medical marijuana.

The workers are trimmers, gardeners and cloners. Cloners clone different strains of marijuana, depending on its medical needs, said Lou Marchetti, the business agent for Local 70, which organized the workers and negotiated the contract. Marjyn Investments provides medical marijuana used by patients suffering from cancer, HIV and other life threatening illnesses.

Rome Aloise, President of Joint Council 7 and Western Region Vice President, praised the work of Local 70.

"The Local was approached by these workers to organize and Local 70 accomplished this goal very quickly," Aloise said. "The Teamsters will provide these workers with the best representation possible."

Marty Frates, Local 70 Secretary-Treasurer, credited Marchetti for obtaining a recognition agreement with the full cooperation and support of the company, enabling the workers to obtain a contract very quickly.

"These workers are highly educated and dedicated to helping people with very serious illnesses," Frates said. "Lou was able to negotiate for them a very good first contract."

Under the two-year contract, the company will pay for the workers' health care costs. The workers will receive pensions under the Western Conference of Pensions Fund, and their wages, currently at $18 an hour, will increase to $25.75 an hour within 15 months. They also get 10 paid holidays and 60 hours of personal time per year.

"The company expects to expand and hopes to have about 150 employees," Marchetti said. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever organize medical marijuana providers, but this is an expanding industry in California."

He opposed it as Denver's district attorney, but Gov. Bill Ritter is now turning to medical marijuana to heal the state budget.

The plan Ritter announced Monday to bridge a nearly $60 million shortfall in the current budget year relies on $9 million from the state's Medical Marijuana Program Cash Fund, financed by fees on patients who get cards to use medical pot. With the number of applicants for medical-marijuana cards expected to double to 150,000 this year, there will still be about $1 million left in the fund even after $9 million is swept from it.

Ritter, a Democrat, said that no matter what he thought about medical marijuana as a prosecutor when voters approved it under Amendment 20 in 2000, it's legal now, and he has a budget to balance.

"I was not in favor of medical marijuana, but I'm also a lawyer and the governor," Ritter said, "and I believe in the law. And it's the law in this state."

The state used $3 million from the fund last year to help balance the budget. Even so, Ritter said using the pot money was just a one-time solution.

"Truly, we find ourselves in difficult, difficult budget circumstances," he said.

Most of Ritter's budget balancing involves temporary fixes.

Ritter said he would cut about $6.2 million in spending from the state's general fund and transfer $53.4 million from various cash funds to help balance the budget. Because the state is not receiving as much federal Medicaid aid as expected, Colorado faces a shortfall of about $60 million in the budget year that began in July.

Ritter said the plan follows his numerous previous balancing efforts aimed at "preserving essential services, protecting the safety net, minimizing pain and requiring shared sacrifices and shared solutions from everyone."

Republicans said Ritter and the Democratic-led legislature had relied too much on federal stimulus money and other one-time solutions.

"The Democrats' partnership with Washington is not working for Colorado taxpayers," said Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp, R-Littleton. "Colorado businesses and families cannot afford any more financial burdens because Democrats in the state legislature and Gov. Ritter speculated on federal funding and guessed wrong."

Colorado was one of about 30 states that had based their budgets on receiving the full amount of increased Medicaid aid from Congress. Instead of getting nearly $212 million as the state had hoped, Colorado received only an estimated $144 million.

Monday's actions announced by Ritter would:

• Save $4.9 million from a 1 percent reduction in payroll costs achieved largely by not filling vacant jobs.

• Cut $1.3 million from the Department of Corrections, including a $250,000 savings from spending less than expected on clothing and cash for inmates leaving prison; and an $89,100 savings from reducing 20 private prison beds at the Trinidad Correctional Facility.

• Transfer $15 million from a cash fund generated by oil and gas drilling that is used to provide grants to local communities affected by the energy companies' activities.

• Sweep $5 million from a local government severance tax fund.

• Take $11.4 million from a grant reserve fund for local communities generated by federal mineral lease royalties.

• Move $9.4 million from a fund for higher education funded by federal mineral lease earnings.

• Transfer $9 million from the Medical Marijuana Program Cash Fund.

• Take $3.5 million from a cash fund in the secretary of state's office.

Nearly $41 million of Monday's budget-bridging actions came from oil- and gas-related funds meant for local communities and higher education. Ritter said not using those funds would have meant other places in the budget had to be cut.

"One of those options was taking teachers out of classrooms, and I'm not willing to do that," he said.

Green car made of cannabis on its way

More than a dozen Canadian companies have joined hands to produce a 'green' car made of hemp. To be run on electricity, the prototype design of the car - to be called Kestrel - will be unveiled at the Electric Mobility Show in Vancouver next month. A consortium of 15 Canadian companies will design
the green under Project Eve which aims to build environmental friendly cars on the long-term basis.

The four-seater will have bio-composite body made of hemp - which is the name for cannabis (bhang) plant. It will run on batteries with 4.5 to 17.3 kilowatt hours of energy. The car will reach a top speed of 90 kilometres per hour.

It will have a range of 40 to 160 kilometres before needing to be recharged, depending on the type of battery, it was reported in Vancouver Monday.

The first 20 cars will be delivered next year.

Hemp-fibre is said to be as strong as fibre-glass - used currently to make car bodies - but much lighter and less expensive. Henry Ford had built his first car made of hemp fibre and resin more than half a century ago.

"It's not an original idea (to use hemp-fibre)," Nathan Armstrong, president of Calgary-based Motive Industries which will test the prototype, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on Monday.

He said the the idea wasn't developed much further as car manufacturers favoured steel. In subsequent decades, fibre-glass and carbon fibre-based composites gained popularity as they are strong.

"But producing these composite is very energy intensive whereas hemp-fibre grows in a field using the energy of the sun. Further, it is twice as strong as any other plant fibre," he said.

"As a structural material, hemp is about the best. Plus, it's illegal to grow it in the US, so it actually gives Canada a bit of a market advantage," Armstrong told the network.

The Canadian auto industry is the eighth largest in the world, with major US and Japanese automakers having assembly plants in Ontario province.
